So, what is the difference between a Chiropractor and a Family Doctor?
Education
The educational requirements for chiropractic doctors are among the most rigorous of all healthcare professionals. Our doctors were required to pass a series of four national board exams and also be licensed in North Carolina. Both an MD (Medical Doctor) and DC (doctor of Chiropractic) attend school for eight years. The first six years of medical school are very alike for both professions. The difference really comes during the last two years, where MDs learn about drugs and medication, while the DCs receive in-depth training in reading x-rays (far more than just broken bones).
Method Differences:
As a result of their education and training, MDs tend to prescribe medicines and utilize surgeries to treat patients, while DCs use a more natural approach. Their differences in training and treatment typically mean that you should see them for different things – for example, if you have broken a bone, you should absolutely see an MD at an emergency room. However, if you are suffering from acute or long-term pain involving your muscles, joints, spine, neck, back, etc you are much better off seeing a DC as they will be able to get to the root of your pain and heal it, while a MD will only be able to temporarily mask the pain with pain killers.
