Whiplash: The most common Auto Accident Injury
Sudden jarring of the head and neck in an auto collision may cause injuries without the victim’s knowledge. When a car moving at 10mph strikes another car, it may transmit to this car a force of 25 tons. The occupant of the car continues to move forward while the head, being hinged at the neck, snaps backward with several tons of force – minus any support. Since the muscular control of the neck is caught off guard, the result is sprained or strained ligaments, muscle spasms, and slipped vertebrae causing disc protrusion. This, in turn, results in pinched nerves, leading to headaches, neck aches, backaches, and/or other problems.
If your automobile was involved in a car wreck, you would make sure it was mechanically sound before driving it again. You would have a mechanic check over the entire car and correct any misalignment, broken parts, or other damage. Right?
The same consideration should be given to your body. When you are in a car wreck, you should have a spinal check-up to make sure there has been no damage to your spine or spinal nerves. Chiropractors are the only ones trained to find the misaligned spinal bones and provide corrective treatment through Chiropractic Adjustments.
The longer you wait, the more damage you suffer, and the more difficult it is to correct the cause of your trouble.
It is important to remember that when your body receives a sudden jolt, as it does in a car crash, misalignment of the vertebrae occurs. Upon impact, the supporting muscles and ligaments of the spinal column may be stretched beyond normal capacity, causing the vertebrae to slip out of normal position. This can cause abnormal irritation of the nerves as they leave the spinal cord. When a pinched nerve exists, you can experience headaches, backaches, arm pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, leg pain, blurred vision – among many other symptoms.
It is also important to remember that serious injuries are not always immediately evident. In addition to wounds that require surgery or hospitalization, there are hidden nerve injuries which may affect you months or even years later. Some of the most tragic cases result in this kind of situation.
A chiropractic examination and x-rays will detect these hidden injuries. Chiropractic treatment will most often correct the condition.

Auto Accident Back Pain: Causes, Types, & Treatment
The injuries that you suffer as the result of a car crash can affect your everyday life for many years following your accident. If untreated, they can even cause lifelong pain and suffering. According to the Mayo Clinic, auto accidents account for almost half of all new spinal cord injuries. Others might suffer from sprains, strains and injuries that may not be noticeable until you complete an MRI or CT scan. These injuries, the ones that can’t be seen with the naked eye, are the ones that can cause the most pain and long-term damage.
When you need back pain treatment right away, contact Liringis Chiropractic & Rehabilitation. The quicker you see us, the faster you can start getting better.
Common Back Injuries after an Accident
The human back is made up of a network of muscles and ligaments, all of which surround the spinal column, which includes vertebrae, discs, and the spinal cord. When a car wreck happens, different parts of the back might be damaged.
The force and type of crash can influence the injuries a person might suffer. However, no matter how minor an accident might seem, victims can experience a range of injuries that can cause pain and suffering. Some of the most common back injuries include:
- Herniated discs
- Soft tissue bruising
- Spinal compression
- Bulging discs
- Fractures
- Sprains and strains
If you’ve been in a car accident, it’s important to recognize all symptoms of a back injury, including:
- Pain
- Muscle weakness
- Numbness in the lower extremities
- Aching or stiffness along the spine
- Muscle spasms
- Difficulty standing for long periods of time
- Difficulty sitting for long periods of time
Back Pain Treatment
Back pain can interfere with your day-to-day activities including; working, exercising, and even playing with your children. Over-the-counter pain relievers might mask your pain for a little while but they don’t actually treat the underlying cause of your pain – this means that when the drugs wear off, the pain will come back, because the problem is still there. Chiropractic care gets to the source of your pain and works to heal it. Dr. Steve Liringis or Dr. Cary Hall will find and fix the root cause of your pain. He will determine what is wrong, prescribe a plan to fix it, and then go to work making you better. The only thing you have to do is follow our instructions and you’ll feel better because you‘ll be on the path to making your pain disappear.
Some back pain treatments include:
- Rehabilitation therapy
- Hot/cold therapy
- Electrical stimulation
- Traction therapy
- Exercises to improve back strength
- Regular Chiropractic Adjustments

Auto Accident Neck Pain: Causes, Types, and Treatment
You were in an auto accident but didn’t see an obvious neck injury or feel pain right away. Now, just 24 hours after the crash, you’re suffering from pain that makes it hard to turn your head, causes headaches, and makes it so you can’t sleep.
Neck injuries, including whiplash, are the most common injuries caused by car wrecks. The motion of a crash, which is usually a jerking motion forward and back, is not absorbed by your vehicle. This means that your neck and upper back muscles often suffer the brunt of the crash.
If you live in Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point, or anywhere else in the Triad and have suffered a car crash neck injury caused by someone else, then you should seek relief from Dr. Liringis or Dr. Hall of Liringis Chiropractic & Rehabilitation. We’re ready to help meet your rehabilitation needs so that you get your life back and get the settlement dollars you deserve.
Neck Injury Symptoms:
You may not realize you’ve been injured after a car wreck if there are no immediate signs of a broken bone, cut/scrape, or loss of consciousness. However, many muscular, neck and spinal injuries are not seen until an MRI/ CT or X-Ray scan is performed. You might experience some other symptoms that are a sign of neck injury, such as:
- Headaches
- Pain in the shoulder or upper arms
- Reduced range of motion in the neck
- Numbness or weakness around the neck
- Muscle spasms
As some injuries may involve the spinal cord, a person can experience pain in the extremities, like the arms and hands, if their neck’s been injured.
Types of Injuries:
The most common neck injury after an accident is whiplash. However, whiplash may fall into two categories; the first is a neck sprain and the second is a neck strain. A sprain will involve the stretching or tearing of the ligaments in the neck. A strain will involve the stretching or tearing of the muscles in the neck.
Some other neck injuries might include:
- Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
- Herniated disc
- Neck fracture
- Cervical dislocation
Neck Pain Treatment
The injury you suffered will determine the type of neck pain treatment you’ll need to recover from the trauma. You may need a brace and then rehabilitation to get your range of motion back. Those who suffer a herniated disc, neck fracture, or whiplash in an accident might need months of physical therapy and chiropractic treatment.
Some neck pain treatments include:
- Rehabilitation therapy
- Hot/cold therapy
- Electrical stimulation
- Traction therapy
- Exercises to improve neck strength
- Regular Chiropractic Adjustments
Dr. Steve Liringis or Dr. Cary Hall can examine your injuries and create a neck pain treatment plan that works best for you.
